My Pest Pros founder Brett Lieberman breaks down why this summer is different, and what local homeowners need to do before it's too late

(Fairfax, VA), April 20, 2026 - Residents across Northern Virginia, Washington D.C., and Maryland are being warned: this summer’s mosquito season is shaping up to be worse than normal. That’s the message from Brett Lieberman, founder of My Pest Pros, the locally owned pest control company serving the DMV region since 2013, and the national science backs him up.

In February 2026, the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) released its bi-annual Bug Barometer® forecast, warning that the Mid-Atlantic region, including Virginia, Maryland, and Washington D.C., faces an accelerated pest season. The report found that this winter’s snowpack acted as an insulating blanket, allowing more pests to survive underground and emerge ready to breed in greater numbers come spring. As summer temperatures rise, ticks, stinging insects, and mosquitoes are all expected to intensify.

“Homeowners who wait until they’re getting bitten every time they step outside have already lost ground. The best time to act is before the season peaks,” said Lieberman, Founder, My Pest Pros.

The conditions locally compound the national picture. Virginia’s mosquito season kicks off as early as late March, peaking through a humid June–August, with over 60 species confirmed statewide and risk rated high across the region, especially in urban and suburban areas with standing water. Maryland’s season mirrors this, peaking June through September. The health stakes are real: West Nile virus is endemic throughout the DMV, with 18 Maryland residents testing positive in 2024, DC Health documenting the virus annually since 2002, and neighborhood spray programs triggered in Bowie and Northwest D.C. in 2025 after positive mosquito samples were detected.

Brett recommends DMV homeowners take action now: eliminate all standing water (gutters, bird baths, flowerpots), keep grass and shrubs trimmed back from the home, and schedule a professional mosquito barrier treatment before the season peaks. “This is a public health issue, not just an annoyance,” Lieberman says. “Prevention is always more effective, and more affordable, than trying to reclaim your yard mid-summer.”
