Pest Guide: What to Know About Mosquitos?

Common Causes of Mosquito Infestations

Mosquitoes are a common sight around Washington, D.C., but some features of your home can make them a more welcoming environment than normal. Stagnant water is a major draw for mosquitos, but many people realize that running water can also provide them with a habitat to breed. Pools, fountains, and natural streams can all harbor mosquitos. Additionally, if your home has bright outdoor lights, mosquitos can be drawn to them.

The Mosquito Lifecycle

Mosquitoes on skin of human

Boxelder bugs live in and around boxelder trees, which change with the seasons. This dictates the seasonal patterns of boxelder bug life cycles.

  • Eggs: After gorging themselves with blood, females will lay a clutch of eggs on a moist surface.
  • Larva: After 24-48 hours, mosquito eggs will hatch into larvae. Mosquito larvae, also called “wrigglers,” look like little centipedes and live in pools of water where they typically feed off algae.
  • Pupa: After about five days, mosquito larvae become “tumblers.” These miniature shrimp-shaped mosquitos don’t eat at this stage but wait to transition into adults.
  • Adults: After another three days, the pupa develops into an adult. Adult male mosquitos will feed off of nectar and live only for about a week. Females will feast on blood from humans and can live for five months or longer.

Common Questions About Mosquitoes

Mosquitos can be extremely dangerous. They can transmit a wide range of diseases, including West Nile Virus. Any mosquito could potentially be a carrier for this disease, making it important to eliminate their sources as soon as you see them in or near your home.

Mosquitos can be highly difficult to eradicate on your own. Fixing leaks and removing standing pools of water can do much to reduce their habitat. However, a professional exterminator can employ many tools to remove mosquitos from your home and keep them from returning.

Mosquitos can bite pets just like humans. They may also find habitats around your pet’s home or nearby water sources. Your pets can get red spots on their skin just like you do after a mosquito bite, making it essential to eradicate any mosquito infestation.

Tips for Preventing Mosquitoes

  • Remove any pools of standing water
  • Clean gutter and make sure they drain properly
  • Flush out bird baths, rain barrels, and other standing areas at least once a week
  • Trim dense overgrowth and tall grasses
  • Replace your dense, low growing perennials with strong scented perennials
