Boxelder bugs live in and around boxelder trees, which change with the seasons. This dictates the seasonal patterns of boxelder bug life cycles.


    

  • Eggs: After gorging themselves with blood, females will lay a clutch of eggs on a moist surface.
    • 

  • Larva: After 24-48 hours, mosquito eggs will hatch into larvae. Mosquito larvae, also called “wrigglers,” look like little centipedes and live in pools of water where they typically feed off algae.
    • 

  • Pupa: After about five days, mosquito larvae become “tumblers.” These miniature shrimp-shaped mosquitos don’t eat at this stage but wait to transition into adults.
    • 

  • Adults: After another three days, the pupa develops into an adult. Adult male mosquitos will feed off of nectar and live only for about a week. Females will feast on blood from humans and can live for five months or longer.
